The Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra is made up of the best young jazz musicians in the Southampton area. It is recognised as one of the most successful and creative organisations of its type in the country. The band has won national awards, played at many major venues and jazz festivals. SYJO has also toured abroad to places such as New York, Boston, Havana and the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
The achievements of the band are linked with its philosophy to promote jazz as a living, vibrant art-form to young musicians. Unlike numerous other youth jazz ensembles, the main bulk of SYJO's music focuses on 'cutting-edge', creative, contemporary British jazz and contemporary jazz composition.
SYJO has also formed very strong links with the professional jazz world, leading to numerous musical collaborations with such jazz giants as Tim Garland, Julian Joseph, Courtney Pine, Guy Barker and Denys Baptiste.
Many ex-SYJO players progress to follow a career in jazz, alumni include members of the Portico Quartet, London City Big Band and numerous professional musicians.
