Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra

SYJO

Welcome!

The Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra is dedicated to playing the best creative, inspirational and swinging jazz music out there.

Bari Sax & Bass Trombonist Wanted!

Fancy playing with one of the best youth jazz groups in the UK?

SYJO is currently looking for a bass trombonist and a baritone sax player to add to the current line-up for this year (2017).

There is no fee to be a member, you will meet some of the best young jazzers in the South of England and get to explore some really exciting music, much of it written especially for SYJO!

On top of this you will get to play with leading professional jazz musicians. We have some great gigs in the diary including with saxophonist Julian Argüelles in April.

You will need to be interested in jazz, have good reading skills and, most importantly, listen to jazz music.

We’d love to hear from improvising musicians but if you haven’t tried improvising yet, don’t worry as this is something you can learn within the ensemble.

If you want to know more, please visit www.syjo.co.uk and get in contact via the website. We look forward to hearing from you!

SYJO Legacy Band Gig 11th Jan @ The Concorde Club

The SYJO Legacy Band features musicians who once played in Southampton Youth Jazz Orchestra and have now gone onto forge careers in music in their own right. Often cited by leading UK jazz institutions as one of the top youth organisations of its type in the country, it is no surprise that the musicians who are playing tonight are massively in demand and have resumes who read like a who’s who in jazz. Tonight’s band (young as they are) have worked with stars such as Wynton Marsalis, Courtney Pine, Julian Joseph, Barbara Thompson, Dave Holland, Snarky Puppy and many others - not bad?

The gig will feature many of these skilled soloists playing a mixture of classic swing, contemporary tunes and funk.

Tickets can be purchased here: http://www.theconcordeclub.com/events/syjo-january-2017/

Recording ‘We Are Southampton’

We are really pleased to have taken part in the recording for Southampton Football Club’s new song ‘We Are Southampton’. Written by the players themselves, it was performed by a number of local groups, including the Són Orchestra, Restless Symphony (vocal group), the Mountbatten Community Choir and SYJO.

It was a fantastic day, we got to ‘jam’ with the footballers and record at a top professional studio. The results sound great too - check out the ‘Behind The Scenes’ video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j99m4yJF_Cw
